UP JUMPED THE DEVIL: The Real Life of Robert Johnson

Hardback book with dust jacket, 330 pages.

Alive between 1911 and 1938, being murdered at the age of 27, Robert Johnson remains a legendary figure with American blues. His life has long been the subject of legend, most famously that he sold his soul to the devil in return for success, something that songtitles such as 'Me and the Devil blues' 'Up Jumped the Devil and 'Hellhound On My Trail' ( and lyrics like “Early this morning you knocked upon my door and I said, hello Satan, I believe it’s time to go.”) have done little to dispel.

His combination of pioneering blues and unholy connotations led him to influence the likes of the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and, indirectly at least, Black Sabbath. However before this recent book his life was greatly misreported and misunderstood. This is THE definitive book on the subject and is the result of an incredible 50 years of research, with interviews conducted since the 1960s.
