Amorphis’ international breakthrough came with the sophomore release, Tales from the Thousand Lakes in 1994. Once again recorded in Stockholm under the supervision of Tomas Skogsberg, it was an album that brought together an unexpected mix of early 1990s death metal and Finnish folklore, all mixed with a hefty touch of 1970s progressive rock. It was a death metal record like no one had ever heard before, thoroughly unique, and not just in the Finnish scene. Prior to recording Tales... Amorphis had added permanent keyboardist to the line-up – certainly an unusual move in early 90s death metal – with one Kasper Mårtenson joining while the band was working on new songs for the new album. It was the arrival of his vintage 1970s organs that added the last crucial bit to the sound of the future classic to be.
