Created in 1995, Fata Morgana was a shortlived dungeon synth / dark ambient project from Mortiis and can in many ways be considered a lost Mortiis album, with the man himself stating:
“I was recording the second or third Mortiis album – they were recorded at the same studio – and they had a different keyboard just sitting there. I started playing it for fun and it sounded so good that it was inspiring, and I started coming up with these short pieces of music that I carried on working on when I got home. They turned into really short songs and this was back in ’94, ’95, so that was something new to me as at the time I was only making really long songs. Looking back, I think I was just looking for reasons to start side projects. It would have been easy to put it out as a Mortiis record, and maybe in one or two ways that would have been better, but that turned into Fata Morgana.”
